Will e-publishing help Africa? - BBC Article

Posted by on

Hi All, I have just been sent a great article on eBooks and their affect within Africa.
 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-25141849

The article starts by acknowledging that Africa lags behind the rest of the world with the internet boom but that as a direct result of the increased use of smart phones and other smart devices we are experiencing a "boom" of our own!

It recognizes that the embracing of technology especially "Western technology" is still hindered by suspicion however progress is being made as African's warm up to eBooks and eBook related technology!

A Simplified Guide on Choosing the Right eBook Format

Posted by on

As somebody interested in having your work in eBook form and possibly sold or distributed online one of the technical questions you would need answered is "what format should I have my eBook converted into?"

This, at face value, might seem like a technical forest you need to explore but luckily the answer recently has really been greatly simplified by the natural evolution of the eBook format Standards and eReader devices themselves!

A basic Google search on the topic will throw back terms such as PDF and KF8 however the answer (from people who have actually had work published) will be that there are only 3 formats to really pay attention to.
Assuming your written work is in either MS Word or Adobe InDesign or PDF (if there is no other choice!) there are really only a few portals where you would want to be selling your eBook. (internationally)

7 Reasons to Publish an eBook

7 Reasons to Publish an eBook

By Jim Wawro

Should you publish an ebook? Following the traditional publication of two print books, the self-publication of a third print book, and the publication of seven ebooks, here are seven reasons I recommend for publishing an ebook:

1. Ever since Gutenberg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johannes_Gutenberg ), the publishing industry has effectively monopolized what books the world reads. Why? Producing printed books from written words requires capital and the expert knowledge of many businesses, including print manufacturing, book marketing, and distribution. However, this key intermediary between reader and writer is no longer exclusive.

Why eBooks Can Be Better

Posted by on

Some Background on the Major eBook Formats

In today's world there are eBooks have two major formats: EPUB and MOBI. EPUB is an open source format compatible with most eReading devices and software (Apple and Android Smartphones, PC, Mac, etc.) There are a wide variety of apps that are usually free to reading the EPUB format. Adobe Digital Editions works well for PC or Mac, iBooks is great for iPhones and iPads, and Moon+ Reader and Mantano Reader are decent Android apps. EPUB is also the format distributed by all vendors (Nook, Smashwords, Kobo, etc.) with the exception of Amazon, which leads us to… The MOBI format is owned by Amazon and is used for Amazon-type devices such as the Kindle eReader, Kindle Fire tablet, and apps. Even though it is a different format, it is very similar to the EPUB format. The best way to make a MOBI eBook is to start with an open source EPUB eBook and convert it using Amazon's proprietary program KindleGen.

eBooks are not Print Books

A common misconception among publishers and authors is that an eBook format should mimic its print cousin as closely as possible. This is often a recipe for disaster. The content of a print book is designed to be read in a fixed layout (e.g. a 5"x8" paperback). However, eBooks must be readable on a wide variety of devices: from a large PC monitor to a small smartphone. Therefore, the content of an eBook needs to be "reflowable" so that it can adjust to the size of the viewing screen that the reader is using. Things like complex tables, images placed next to text, and background images may cause problems on eBooks and create a poor reading experience if not handled properly.

So What can an eReader do - Amazon's Kindle Fire

Posted by on

kindle fire

So I thought I would answer the question today of what you can and can't do on Amazon's new Kindle Fire.
I received mine as a gift have since had the pleasure of reading a few eBooks from device.
The device itself is no more than a few millimeters thick as weighs about as much as a large novel and has a matte black finish that feels very smooth to the touch.

The only actual button the user can press is the on/off button found on top of the device the remainder of the interaction is handled through the touch screen interface commonly found on the smartphones most people use nowadays.
The standard version of the Kindle Fire interfaces to the outside world through two different methods, either a Wifi link or a physical USB cable.

The Cost of Self-Publishing Online

Posted by on

I was asked recently by an aspiring South African Author about the costs involved in converting his book to an eBook friendly format and publishing online.

Depending on the route taken and the online eBook portal used, the answer is, very little

The first decision affecting cost for an author to make is what format will you want the eBook to be in?
The options here generally would be PDF, EPUB or MOBI

Amazon Secrets for South African Authors - No Free eBooks

Posted by on

Ever wanted to publish an eBook for free?
This would be a great strategy to get your name on the lips of your audience and is especially handy for new authors to accelerate the marketing of your eBook.

A great choice would then be to list your eBook as a free download on the worlds biggest eBook portal Amazon.com
Great idea right? Maybe not, Amazon as a business model do not allow authors to list their eBooks as free downloads instead forcing a minimum selling price of $0.99

Looking at my previous blog entry regarding the Amazon Whispernet Surcharge, your "free" eBook would now actually cost $2.99 - so much for free right?

Amazon Secrets for South African Authors - The Whispernet Surcharge.

Posted by on

Ever wondered if authors outside mainstream Amazon countries are on equal footing with regards to eBook sales?
The answer is unfortunately is no, due in part to a thorn in many international author's side, it goes my the name of Amazon's Whispernet Surcharge.

The Whispernet Surcharge is levied against authors using Amazon's KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) interface to self-publish.
All Kindle eBooks loaded for sale on Amazon will be affected by having a $2 surcharge added for customers purchasing the eBook from outside main-stream (first world) countries. (People in the US/ UK/ Germany/ France etc will be able to purchase for the originally intended price)

I discovered this when publishing a customers novel through Amazon, intending to sell for a price of $3.5.
Browsing over the published book a few hours later admiring my handy work I noticed something strange in the pricing of the eBook.
While later browsing over the live eBook listing on Amazon I noticed the list price indicated $5.5, or exactly $2 more than I had listed the eBook for, I then spent some time researching this apparent error and found the following interesting info.....

Why Convert to eBook - The Top Non Technical Reasons.

Posted by on

Why would an author want their Microsoft Word (or PDF, or any other format) Book in an eBook friendly format as opposed the the tried-and-trusted printed version?

The local publishing industry generally does not do justice to the smaller and growing author industry, especially if you are writing on a niche topic. Authors often struggle to get the attention their work deserves, and are often left in the dark with regards to royalties and sales performances, eagerly awaiting updates from the publishing houses that comes sporadically if at all.

By converting your manuscript to an eReader friendly format all distribution related boundaries fall away and your book is now in a format that the rest of the world can access in an instant.
