SAIR Book Festival - Johannesburg 2016

SAIR Book Festival - Johannesburg 2016

I was lucky enough to attend the SAIR book festival last year held in Johannesburg. It was a cosy event that was attended by a several well-known South African authors. I remember having a great chat with Rachel Morgan an author who has numerous best-selling titles published on the Amazon shelves. I shared a tasty cup of coffee with Erika Bester one of the masterminds behind FireQuill Publishing who herself has a growing collection of books rising in prominence on Amazon.

Mixing with other talent in the book industry has a lasting effect on those looking to explore their potential with the paper and pen. Rubbing shoulders with existing and unassuming artistic talent that find themselves exactly where you have seen yourself in those reoccurring daydreams. These book events are also a great chance to wear your networking hat, bumping into other industry experts who might know the right person you need to connect with to progress to the next step of your journey. Oh, have I mentioned the value you get from the speakers at these events?

Open Book Festival - Cape Town 2015

Open Book Festival - Cape Town 2015

The 5th Open Book Festival will be hosted in District Six, Cape Town at the Fugard Theatre.

The event, similar to the recent Kingsmead Bookfair will host an impressive list of local and international talent. Looking at the author line up from their website I see a few names that really make me want to take a road trip to CPT and get away from the bubbling metropolis of Johannesburg. Names like Alex van Tonder, Antjie Krog, Amazon eBook titan Deon Meyer, Gareth Crocker and the controversial PA Zelda la Grange ensure that the programme will have the benefit of years of valuable writing experience.

Jozi Book Fair - September 2015 at Wits University

Jozi Book Fair - September 2015 at Wits University

September 2015 sees the Jozi Book Fair (JBF) take place at Wits University in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. I have searched the internet far and wide for information on the event, such as a programme detailing the lineup etc but (at the time of writing this article) the event website seems decidedly bare on information on specifics. I would recommend that readers interested in the event stay tuned in to the event on Facebook and Twitter for updates.

The area of the Jozi Bookfair website dealing with the programme seems to be out of date at the time of writing this article. Hopefully the readers who visit this page closer to the time will find the 2015 programme.

The guest speaker at this years event is Nokugcina Elsie Mhlophe. To be lazy and totally quote from her website (http://www.gcinamhlophe.co.za/):

Kingsmead Book Fair - Saturday 23 May 2015

Kingsmead Book Fair - Saturday 23 May 2015

Saturday 23 May 2015 sees the Kingsmead Bookfair take place in Melrose Johannesburg. This event almost snuck by without me being able share it with everyone, luckily I found it in time.

The Kingsmead Bookfair is now in it's fourth year and looking at the stellar line up of not just authors, but industry celebrities I am honestly surprised it has not received greater mainstream coverage. (Then again maybe my head has been in the ground).

Notable names attending include: Khaya Dlanga, Ferial Haffajee, Moeletsi Mbeki, Michael Mol...the list really does go on much further. For a full list of the attending authors, click here.

Writing Seminar - Tricks of the Trade for Self-Published Authors, 4 October 2014

Writing Seminar - Tricks of the Trade for Self-Published Authors, 4 October 2014

Hi Everyone, www.myeBook.co.za will be hosting a slot on Digital Publishing at this up and coming seminar for writers. The event will be held in Randburg, Johannesburg over the weekend of the 4/ 5th October. There is a great line up of experts covering a wide range of topics, it would be great to see you there!

About the Event. Porcupine Press has designed an intensive two-day workshop for people interested in writing and publishing their own books. We have been motivated to arrange this workshop in response to many requests from authors wanting to know how to publish, present and market their book successfully. All too often, authors are so keen to have their book published that they fail to understand all the implications of self-publishing ‒ or they simply do not know where to go to have a book professionally produced, marketed and distributed.   Workshop participants will be given the necessary tools and insight to become a self-published author. The workshop will cover the complete publishing process from writing, to editing, to production, to distribution, as well as the marketing options available for finished titles.   Contact Porcupine Press fo more details;    http://www.porcupinepress.co.za/
