Looking to begin your career as an author? Wondering what software you need to to write, record your manuscripts? We have assembled a collection of software that will help any author to not only begin writing and recording their book, but save money as most of the software is absolutely free! Let us know if you find any software that you think would really help authors and we will gladly add it too our list.



1. What software can I use to read my eBook from my computer?


MOBI format - Only sold on Amazon 

 To review your MOBI/ AZW/ KF8 Kindle book

  1. Using Kindle previewer (recommended) or

  2. Kindle reading app or

  3. Read your eBook online by visiting (You will need an Amazon account for this option)

ePUB format - Sold on Apple iBookstore, Barnes and Noble and other online stores. 

To read the ePUB version of your eBook.

  1. We prefer reading ePUB file files using Readium, the Chrome browser plugin OR

  2. Adobe Digital editions software.

2. Free word-processors




Description: LibreOffice is community-driven and developed software, and is a project of the not-for-profit organization, The Document Foundation.


Apache OpenOffice


Description: Apache OpenOffice is the leading open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more. It is available in many languages and works on all common computers. It stores all your data in an international open standard format and can also read and write files from other common office software packages. It can be downloaded and used completely free of charge for any purpose.




Description: Scribus is a desktop publishing (DTP) application, released under the GNU General Public License as free software. It is based on the free Qt toolkit, with native versions available for Linux, Unix-like operating systems, Mac OS X, Haiku, Microsoft Windows, OS/2 and eComStation. Scribus is designed for layout, typesetting and to prepare files for professional quality image setting equipment. It can also create animated and interactive PDF presentations and forms. Example uses include writing small newspapers, brochures, newsletters, posters and books.

4. Miscellaneous


Kindle Kids' Book Creator

Kindle Kids' Book Creator is a downloadable tool that helps you create illustrated children's books. You can import a file from PDF, JPG, TIFF, PNG, or PPM formats. 


Kindle Gen (command line based).

KindleGen is a command line tool used to build eBooks that can be sold through Amazon's Kindle platform. This tool is best for publishers and individuals who are familiar with HTML and want to convert their HTML, XHTML, XML (OPF/IDPF format), or ePub source into a Kindle Book.


Kindle Previewer

Kindle Previewer is a tool that emulates how books display on Kindle devices and applications. Kindle Previewer makes it easy to preview the layout of a book and make sure its text displays properly for any orientation or font size. This tool is recommended for publishers, eBook conversion companies, and individual authors in combination with KindleGen to produce the highest quality Kindle books. It is available for both Windows and Mac OS X platforms.


Kindle Plugin for Adobe InDesign

Kindle Plugin for Adobe InDesign® is a plug-in which can be used to convert documents or books created in Adobe InDesign® to Kindle format.
